Town Centre Plantings
Mossley, UK
Town Centre Plantings by The Town Team, appealed for funds to help with planting flowers in Top and Bottom Mossley. The group of volunteers give their time each year to supply and install hanging baskets and planters in Top and Bottom Mossley. Each year the group strive to do more and to do it better. Volunteer labour is given for free and that includes volunteers from Mossley Hollins School. The income from sales of hanging baskets, plant sales and sponsorship only funds so much. In 2020 the group wants to do much more so they pitched at Mossley SOUP to help raise the funds needed.
Simple Repair Corner
Oslo, norway
Simple Repair Corner is a physical space in the center where people can come and repair their clothes by themselves, with a guidance from an amateur who knows the basics. For it is basics we are talking about here, things that everyone could do if they had the tools and a little extra motivation, like a social opportunity. Lots of clothes are being tossed away due to minor imperfections. You will not fatigue yourself with submitting it to a tailor, that’s an overkill. But who has a needle or the right color of thread, or a spare zipper? This place is open daily from 16 to 19, because it uses the opening hours of a cafe or a library. The push to use it is your favorite sweater getting a hole, or your the news about the gigantic carbon footprint the clothing industry has. The pull is the welcoming, casual atmosphere and a cup of fair trade coffee, showing that you care about minimizing the burden your consumption creates on the ecosystem. We are talking about simple repairs that don’t require a skilled volunteer, but anyone who’s tried it once before can give you a hand if you’re unsure. There is no sign up, no fee, just a simple drop-in. Simplicity and cooperation with an existing venue, volunteer input and the warm feeling you get from achieving something by yourself and in a company of others who understand the importance of the little stuff.
WAV (We Amplify Voices)
Columbus, ohio
The primary goal of the WAV is to foster creative confidence and model leadership attributes through an experiential writing and music program. The program serves middle school students in Franklin County schools. Participants develop self-confidence, collaboration, and leadership skills by working with teammates to select a style of music, write lyrics, and develop production plans. Students benefit from individualized instruction from professional musicians and the exposure to music as both an art form and a potential career path. The process of writing songs also supports students’ social and emotional learning by providing a safe space to talk about their experiences and turn them into lyrics. Further, youth learn how to efficate for their ideas—and listen to others—as they make group decisions around the final direction of the song. Instructors receive professional training in working with young people as well as income to support their music. Columbus SOUP funded WAV to work with Kaleidoscope Youth Center to work with their middle school aged kids to create a song which will debut at the final Columbus SOUP event on February 9.
